- Read to them, no matter how old they are.
- Homeschooling is an endeavor of love. Remember, relationship over academics
- Understand early on that it’s their education. Involve them in the planning process and actually listen to what they say
- Homeschooling is a curated education tailored to your individual child’s needs. Don’t compare them to their public school peers, relatives, or more importantly to their own siblings.
- Lead by example, passionately pursue your own learning.
- Relax, they will learn it all eventually; whether it’s gradually over time or in that last year before they leave your house.
- Break when they need it but also when you need it…even if it’s only an hour into your school day.
- You can not schedule, plan or force a love for learning.
- Disregard age recommendations for books. Read your teen picture books and read your baby chapter books. A good story shouldn’t be limited by age
- Asking a leading question instead of giving them the answer
- Learn alongside them. You don’t have to know all the answers. Be ok with saying you don’t know.
- In the endeavor to cultivate a love for learning remember to cherish the joys of childhood.
